Jack

Jack Bean stood in the expansive room admiring the impressive bean stalk growing up through the middle of it. It was as thick and green as any back in his homeland of Enchantment. Except, of course, that this one was growing inside rather than outside. He was holding six shiny beans in his hand--beans that held magic--wondering why there were six. Something told him that couldn’t be right. In Jack’s original story, there had been only five beans. One for each princess. So why six?

And where were the women now? Where was his beloved Snow?

Snow, Jack thought. How could I ever have forgotten you?

How indeed. He had a lot of questions and planned to interrogate everyone as soon as they returned.

He paced around the room, tracing his fingers along the dusty woodwork, faded wallpaper, and dented floor. The door had suffered a cruel blow from what appeared to be an ax, the chandelier was missing several crystals, and some lightbulbs. Windows had been painted shut with layer upon layer of dingy white. The poor house seemed to have suffered from some cruel fate. Just as he had. Just as they all had. So he did the thing he thought Snow would have wanted. Jack looked at the extra bean in his hand. He walked over to the makeshift bed that Snow had lain upon only hours ago, placed the bean on top of the pillow, and tilted his head toward the ceiling, remembering his role in Enchantment.

“This one belongs to you, house. On behalf of the Queen’s royal navy, Captain Jack thanks you.”

By the time he walked out of the room, everything had changed.

In the hallway, Jack felt the floor rumble. The boards danced and shifted beneath his feet. He tried to brace himself between the walls, except they too shifted, popped and expanded. An invisible decorator papered the walls in a shimmery gold and purple fleur-de-lis print and, seconds later, the floor was buffed and shined to a rich mahogany tone while delicate glass sconces flamed to life, one after another, down the new long hallway.

Jack had seen many things in his time--some ugly, some exquisite, some downright magical. But he had never seen a house give itself a makeover. This was a first for the giant whisperer (a label he much preferred to giant slayer, as killing was a last resort when battling a rogue Giganthropus).

It took Jack several wrong turns and fifteen minutes before he found his way back to the kitchen.

His jaw dropped at the transformation there too.

There were now two sets of French doors opening onto a lush patio garden, despite Hansel having yet to return. The old chipped appliances had been replaced with gleaming industrial-sized models. The sturdy cabinets were trimmed with bric a brac and glazed in creamy white and apple green. In the center of the wood plank floor, an invisible artist was rapidly painting a large red rose. Jack blinked, and the longest farmhouse table he had ever seen floated over the rose and settled to the floor.
